Nancy just returned from an expedition to Roche Bros. in West Roxbury (ay carumba: No candied yams!) and reports the sheer insanity of the sort that only people who have survived getting in and out of the parking lot there can really understand:
It was like being in a training video! You're backing out, and there's one person behind you, and another person coming the other way, and then a pedestrian comes out of nowhere - and then somebody else starts backing out. . ... Somebody's trying to make a big swing into your space, so now they're on your side of the road and you have to go around them. You have to swivel your head constantly. And then, of course, there's always some joker parked in the no-parking zone right in front of the entrance to the store, today it was a Brink's truck, and so you have to go around them and hope nobody's coming the other way and there aren't any pedestrians coming into the crosswalk, because they never look.

I once made the mistake of popping into the Whole Foods near Symphony Hall (which is NOT designed for even light foot traffic) the afternoon before Thanksgiving....ye Gods what a nightmare.

Sorry you had to go through that ordeal, lisamcc. I went to the River Street Whole Foods in Cambridge last night and, before I even went into their parking lot, I could see that it was going to be "musical cars", so to speak. So, I parked on the street and walked into Whole Foods from there. Amazingly enough, however, despite the crowds, I didn't have too, too hard a time getting in, buying a couple of things that I wanted, and going out. Again, didn't want to try parking in their lot though.

She only rarely goes to Roche Bros -- but she happened to be nearby and had a few things to buy. It never dawned on her just what a madhouse it would be there.

that's not such an easy parking lot on a regular day.

True - She reminded me that the parking lot wasn't really all that worse than on a normal day there (me, I tend to go to the Shaw's on Spring Street - hasn't been a line or a parking problem there since Roche Bros. opened the new store).

is a hellish place to be ANYTIME. I was also there around 3:30 pm on Wednesday, and was very, very afraid.....I was behind the Brink's truck, and some kook in back of ME just barrelled around me like he earned it. BUT, he was probably desperate to get out of there. His younger companion looked very, very worried.....

All the Roche Bros. Parking lots are bad at each store. Why are they this way? They are completely ill conceived.
