Update, Tuesday a.m.: The MBTA rolled out shuttle buses to replace Ashmont Red Line service after the water disrupted power to the trains.

A National Grid crew working in the street at Dorchester Avenue at Ashmont Street in Dorchester around 6 p.m., struck a Boston Water and Sewer Commission main, turning Peabody Square into an impassible lake and forcing firefighters to evacuate at least one building after they started smelling a strong odor of gas. The owner of a high-end Harrison Avenue bridal shop charges the Boston Water and Sewer Commission knew its old 30-inch main under Harrison Avenue could rupture at any moment and that it should have done something before it let go on April 14, 2020, flooding the street, stores, parking lots and basements with 6.5 million gallons of water, which surged out of the exploded pipe at a rate of 55,000 gallons a minute. Liberty Mutual alleges, in a lawsuit filed yesterday in Suffolk Superior Court, that the BWSC caused a 2020 flood along Harrison Avenue in the South End on April 14, 2020 by overpressuring its mains, including the 30-inch wide pipe that burst, flooding basements and parking garages and lots. The Boston Water and Sewer Commission reports a water main under St. James Street in Roxbury burst early this morning, ending water service to about 15 customers on the street and forcing the road to be shut down as repairs were made.

BWSC expected the repairs to the main to be finished tonight, but said restoring the road surface would require keeping the road shut on Monday.
