South Boston youth-sports activist Bob Ferrara announced today he's running for the District 2 seat (South Boston, South End, Chinatown, Bay Village and a smidge of Dorchester) held by incumbent Bill Linehan. Suzanne Lee, former principal of the Quincy School in Chinatown, had previously announced she was running as well.
Ferrara accused Linehan of being a Menino mouthpiece:
Inside baseball and backroom deals have been deemed acceptable practice for representing our neighborhoods, and I have seen enough. The City of Boston is going in the wrong direction to serve the families that still live here and its ability to attract people who want to raise their families in the City. Schools, community centers and libraries are closing in a shortsighted attempt to save money – yet property tax bills continue to rise. I love our neighborhoods and I won’t sit on the sideline as its future prosperity is jeopardized.
He added:
A significant portion of the City budget is devoted to public education, and I believe that those dollars should go to the classrooms, not bureaucrats. Afterschool programs should also be a priority - as our children are most vulnerable between the hours of 2PM and 6PM. As City Councillor, I will also hold developers to local zoning laws, and make sure that abutters concerns are heard and honored. Neighborhood concerns will be my highest priorities.
