Update: Moulton and his wife are now self quarantining with symptoms.
Poor Seth Moulton doesn't have enough to do with his time: He's cosponsoring a resolution with a Republican from Indiana to officially blame China for coronavirus. A Moulton mouthpiece says the failed presidential candidate's logic is that blaming China would help stop President Trump from becoming more xenophobic.

Jamie Belsito, Lisa Peterson and Angus McQuilken. There have been a lot of people "thinking about it" since he went up against Pelosi, so there will probably more by May 5th, which is the limit for the state primary.
I had been impressed by the intelligence he had brought to his wartime experience and thought he showed promise. I probably will not vote for him again, but I say this with regret.
I'm running against Seth Moulton

So I'm running against Seth Moulton in the 6th CD, where we need a Democrat as our Democratic nominee for Congress. There's room for everyone in my campaign for change. Learn more at www.angusforcongress.com. Follow on Facebook at @angusforcongress.
Here's my statement from yesterday regarding the Banks/Moulton resolution:
Statement of Angus McQuilken, Democratic Candidate for Congress in Massachusetts 6th Congressional District:
"Instead of focusing on the economic recovery bill, or holding the President's feet to the fire on his tragically slow response to the coronavirus, Seth Moulton is spending his time teaming up with House Republicans to provide cover to this President for his failures of leadership. President Trump's failure to act when action was urgently needed has left thousands of American lives at risk. This resolution won't save a single one of those lives, or put a single person back to work. It is simply a Republican attempt to distract, divide and promote xenophobia. Congressman Moulton's priorities are all wrong, and his failure to get even a single other Democrat to join him in sponsoring this resolution shows his lack of clout on Capitol Hill. This district needs a Democrat as their Democratic nominee for Congress, and voters are going to have a clear choice on September 1."
Yes he does...

Asian-Americans are being physically attacked in the street.
It all plays into the Republican effort to demonize and scapegoat and divert attention from what they're trying to do.
The Nazis did it with the Jews before World War II, just as Christians in Europe had been doing with Jews for centuries. When things go wrong, deflect all the blame onto scapegoats. It never ends well.
Just as important, Moulton's stunt here does absolutely nothing to help his constituents prepare and deal with what's coming. Blame Canada, um, China? How does that help get masks and ventilators and other supplies to hospitals in his district or the state?

I see what's going on, and none of it has been violence against Asians. I also see what's been reported, which is different, but hard to quantify because much of the reporting appears to reflect an inflammatory, partisan agenda among reporters.
Seeing what's going on is different from seeing what's being reported. Not the same thing.
You know...

I think I must be missing something here, because these (like the other stories I've seen) appear to be reporting on the statements given by police or governmental officials, but maybe that's "inflammatory" or "partisan" these days.

Meanwhile, Gaffin is saying that criticizing the Chinese government for failing to curtail this early is racist, going as far as to reference Nazi Germany. My point is that it is possible to criticize a government (in the case I cited, even a kind of democratically elected one) of a nation without impugning every person of that nationality.
Of course, I’d love to see what the guy whose comment I challenged has to say.
half-baked analogy
By berkleealum
Wed, 03/25/2020 - 7:54pm
“chinese virus†or “kung flu†is not a meaningful criticism of the chinese government, in the same way that saying the israeli government “jewed†the palestinians out of their land wouldn’t be especially worthwhile.
Have you seen the resolution?
By Waquiot
Wed, 03/25/2020 - 10:54pm
It's here.
Lot's of talk in the resolution about how the government of the People's Republic of China failed to act. References to the brave work of Zhang Jixian, Yu Wenbin, Ai Fen, and of course the late Li Wenliang in trying to spread the word when they noticed the outbreak, work that was punished by the Chinese government. But sorry, I missed the references to "chinese virus" and "kung flu" in the resolution, but maybe I didn't read it too closely.
But I again ponder, why is it racist to propose a resolution condemning the actions of the government of the People's Republic of China, and does that by extension mean I am antisemitic for calling West Bank settlements illegal?
context
By berkleealum
Thu, 03/26/2020 - 8:16am
the resolution doesn’t exist in a vacuum. it seems to exist to legitimize the sentiments expressed by the president and his cronies by softening the edges a bit. further, it isn’t helpful at this time considering the uptick in prejudice against people of asian descent.
so yes, perhaps you could be antisemitic for calling the west bank settlements illegal — if you were also known to use antisemitic language in other settings.
So, to summarize

Thu, 03/26/2020 - 9:23am
Seth Moulton, who is not known for expressing any prejudice against any Asian group, is racist for calling out the Chinese government for causing this pandemic to spread due to early inaction, in a resolution specifically praising Chinese people?

at the very least, in a time where the GOP’s rhetoric and trump’s will are one and the same, it seems questionable that moulton would co-write a controversial bill with a republican, see it sponsored by 40 republicans, and refuse to rethink his position when asked to by an asian american representative of his own party.

Congress passes resolutions calling out the failings of governments all the time. Seeing how this failing is affecting the entire planet, I'd say it's not a bad thing.
What happened is that someone caught wind of members of the House blaming the Communist Party of China for all of this, and they decided to spin things. Then others followed suit.

Including a 7 year old Burmese boy who was slashed across the face.
What's racist about this is that it will embolden our Moron-American community to step up the violence. When you have a high media profile, you have to bear in mind what effect your actions will have on the Moron-American community and what the consequences will be. `

Real world vs. legislation
By lbb
Wed, 03/25/2020 - 2:09pm
We have to be concerned about effects, not just plausible deniability afforded by the strict interpretation of legislation. Threats, harassment and acts of violence against Asian and Asian-American people is happening now. That's the real world. And in the real world, this legislation stands exactly zero chance of extracting anything from China. Nothing of tangible benefit or even moral satisfaction will come from it. It does no good and contributes to harm. Now, are you still gonna argue that there's nothing wrong with it?
Threats, harassment and acts of violence against Asians? Fake.

Could you share any links to confirm an increase in these incidents happening? My peers in law enforcement and friends at 911 aren't aware of this but perhaps they missed it. This goes for Asian-American officers who aren't aware of any uptick in these crimes either. Awful if true but worse if fake news.

Do they still teach the 5 W's of journalism?
By O-FISH-L
Wed, 03/25/2020 - 1:18pm
Racism? Just stop, please. China is the factual answer to at least three of the 5 W's of journalism in the virus origin story. Have we abandoned the truths of the 5 W's?
With these facts established, what is the real reason behind the media/left effort to intentionally mislead, protect China and brand truthtellers as racist? It's always amusing when white liberals make unauthorized declarations on behalf of oppressed groups even while most Chinese and Asian-Americans are furious with the Chinese government for lying. Just as the left is doing here. Is there any tangible evidence of an uptick of attacks on Asian-Americans when the streets are deserted? Life expectancy will surely increase thanks to the virus. Joe Biden is correct, a cure would be worse!

By adamg

Until you show me proof that China deliberately released this virus, however, it's pointless to "blame" them for anything. Unless you're willing to consider reparations for the descendants of people who died from the "Spanish" flu now that we know it started here (either in Kansas or right here in Massachusetts).
Moulton's proposed resolution will do nothing but escalate violence against Asian-Americans. Scapegoating has a long tradition in American and western tradition. Have we learned nothing?
Why is he so insistent on introducing this resolution? On the one hand, I shouldn't care, because, fortunately, he's not my representative. On the other hand, he's at best, helping Republicans further a racist campaign to divert attention from the real issues we have to deal with now: Where is the declaration to get more supplies to medical workers?
Well, at least the left has given up any basis for reparations
By O-FISH-L
Wed, 03/25/2020 - 1:34pm
Liberals should tread carefully in their zeal to hold Communist China blameless. Doesn't that undermine the call for slavery reparations in the US by validating the claim that no American alive today "intentionally" participated in the harm caused by slavery? Meanwhile the same Communist Chinese leaders who covered up the Wuhan virus are still alive and well but immediately deemed not reponsible by the US left. You can't make this stuff up!
